STARTING FROM URBAN RENEWAL
This competition responds to the policy direction of the Changping District Government regarding “micro-resource transformation” and “pilot unit coordination first” in urban renewal. It selects two representative urban roads, Huilongguan East-West Street and Liangshuihe Road, as practical samples. Through the intervention scale of urban furniture, it explores replicable and promotable street renewal paths.
GROUNDED IN REAL-LIFE NEEDS
The target areas commonly face several challenges. Public amenities are insufficient in number and limited in function, failing to meet the demands of intensive daily use. The renewal of urban furniture has been largely piecemeal, lacking a coherent systematic approach. The streetscape struggles with overlapping peaks of commuting and community life, resulting in a critical shortage of spaces for lingering and rest. Moreover, there is an absence of public venues that embody local culture and collective memory. In response, this competition prioritizes functionality and authentic user experience. It discourages arbitrary sculptural forms divorced from practical needs and encourages designers to conceive urban furniture as an integrated “public realm furnishings system,” rather than as standalone decorative objects.
ASPIRING TO INTEGRATED AESTHETIC HARMONY AND SYSTEMIC TRANSFORMATION
We seek submissions that are aesthetically distinctive yet eschew transient online celebrities, and that are deeply contextual without devolving into superficial iconography. The designs must holistically synthesize a range of factors—including circulation patterns, human scale, pedestrian flows, demographic profiles, street-edge conditions, wind patterns, and solar angles—to form a coherent response to the actual urban fabric.
Urban Furniture
Through a strategy of lightweight interventions, we seek to awaken the latent stories of the neighborhood. This process represents both an intentional engagement with the city’s vital pulse and an authentic dialogue with the texture of its daily life.
As Jane Jacobs articulated in The Death and Life of Great American Cities, vibrant urban life springs from the continuous presence of “eyes upon the street” and the intricate choreography of the “street ballet.” This vitality is nurtured by the casual encounters on sidewalks, the rooted-ness of local businesses, and the serendipity fostered by a diversity of uses. Within this ballet, urban furniture acts as essential stage pieces and social anchors. It encourages dwelling, observation, interaction, and the emergence of new social patterns. By imbuing the everyday environment with a sense of theater, well-designed street furniture can help transform the street back into the neighborhood’s living room—forming the very structural framework of the “public neighborhood” that Jacobs so eloquently championed.
Reimagining Urban Furniture: From Utility to Social Catalyst.
Ultimately, you will think like a designer, devising a clever, low‑cost, iterative“trigger”—perhaps a subtly shaped ledge to lean against, a light‑touch refresh of an old news kiosk, or a modular system that adapts from daytime market stalls to evening community gathering spaces. Your design is not an end point, but a beginning: a seed that, once planted, invites residents to co‑create, nurturing countless future possibilities.
In this competition, we propose reimagining “street furniture”—benches, lampposts, signage, installations, planters—as a medium for urban life. These elements should transcend mere standardized objects to become social conduits that carry collective memory, foster chance encounters, and spark spontaneous activity. As urban renewal evolves, moving beyond mere physical transformation, we invite you to explore Changping’s lanes and alleys through multiple lenses:Like an anthropologist, trace the footsteps of early‑morning residents. Notice how they pause naturally at a street corner—and consider how a small, thoughtful intervention might lend a moment of grace to their daily routine;Like an artist, observe the desire paths worn by commuters across neighborhood edges. These informal shortcuts could become points of departure for subtle artistic installations;Like a film director, step into the morning market. Among the repurposed stools and carts that form impromptu gaming corners, find the perfect frame for your characters and story.
Changping’s streets stand at the crossroads of tradition and renewal. We look for designs that demonstrate deep insight, empathetic engagement, and inventive spark—designs that can:Connect and stitch street to user through a series of furniture “nodes,” creating meaningful walking experiences and visual conversations. Translate memory by weaving local history, culture, or natural elements into everyday street scenes through contemporary, function‑inspired design.Catalyze vitality by transforming neglected corners, wall‑adjacent spaces, and barren plazas into settings for play, rest, pop‑up exhibitions, performances, and other small but precious public‑life moments. What we seek is not a standalone object, but a process rich with street narratives. Let’s start with a cluster of seats that invite conversation, a lamppost that lights the way home, and every other subtle, steadfast change—and together draft a proposal for Changping that is insightful, warm, and alive.
Transforming streets into exhibition spaces to redefine the experience of public realms.
Integrating local narratives to forge emotional connections.
Integrating way finding, lighting, and intersection design makes streets more responsive and intelligent. This approach emphasizes systemic integration, requiring us to look beyond the linear street corridor and consider the broader urban network.
Art installations can imbue the urban environ-ment with emotional resonance and atmosphere. These interventions should be site-responsive and functional, ensuring they integrate seamlessly rather than serving as mere spectacle or superficial decoration.
