Gubeikou Town: A Historic Gateway to Beijing’s Northeast

古北口镇位于北京市东北部密云区,是首都的东北大门,距北京市区约 120 公里,距密云城区 55 公里。这里是北京东北部唯一的中国历史文化名镇,拥有深厚的历史文化底蕴。本次竞赛的核心场地——古北口镇政府路,从长城古镇会客厅起点至古北口历史文化馆终点,是古北口镇的行政与文化中心。街区建筑破旧、配套缺失,大量资产处于闲置状态,亟待创意力量的注入与激活。
Gubeikou Town is located in Miyun District in northeastern Beijing. Serving historically as the capital’s northeastern gateway, it lies about 120 kilometers from downtown Beijing and 55 kilometers from Miyun’s urban center. It is the only officially designated National Historic and Cultural Town in northeastern Beijing and is renowned for its deep historical and cultural heritage.The core site for this competition—follows the government road of Gubeikou Town, stretching from the Great Wall Ancient Town Reception Hall to the Gubeikou History and Culture Museum. It serves as the administrative and cultural heart of the town.The buildings are dilapidated, supporting infrastructure is largely missing, and many properties remain idle. The area urgently needs the infusion of creative energy to revitalize it.

Three Core Cultural Resources

庙宇文化:

历史上曾有庙宇72座,现存10余处,形成了独特的”庙宇群落”景观,是本次竞赛的核心灵感来源。长城文化:拥有卧虎山、蟠龙山等40余公里未经商业开发的长城段落,是中国长城体系中最精华、最险峻的部分之一。

边关文化:

自古为兵家必争之地,是中原通往松辽平原和内蒙古草原的咽喉要道,留下了丰富的战争遗迹与戍边故事。

Temple Culture: Historically, the town was home to 72 temples. More than ten remain today, forming a distinctive “temple cluster” landscape that serves as the central inspiration for this competition.Great Wall Heritage: The area preserves over 40 kilometers of largely undeveloped Great Wall segments, including those at Wohushan and Panlongshan. These stretches are among the most dramatic and best-preserved sections within the entire Great Wall system.Frontier Heritage: For centuries, Gubeikou was a strategic military stronghold—a crucial passage connecting the Central Plains with the Songliao Plain and the Inner Mongolian grasslands. This history has left behind a wealth of battlefield relics and stories of frontier defense.

古街区概况:本次竞赛的核心场地——古北口镇古街区,即古北口镇政府路,从长城古镇会客厅起点至古北口历史文化馆终点,是古北口镇的行政与文化中心。
Overview of the Ancient Street District:The core site for this competition—the Gubeikou Ancient Street District—follows the government road of Gubeikou Town, stretching from the Great Wall Ancient Town Reception Hall to the Gubeikou History and Culture Museum. It serves as the administrative and cultural heart of the town.
街区现状:建筑破旧、配套缺失,大量资产处于闲置状态,亟待创意力量的注入与激活。
Current Condition: The buildings are dilapidated, supporting infrastructure is largely missing, and many properties remain idle. The area urgently needs the infusion of creative energy to revitalize it.

古北妙街,不是你想象的庙,也不是你想象的街。当你站在古北口镇的古街入口,你看到的是一条沉睡的街。青砖灰瓦,庙宇林立,长城脚下的香火气与岁月感扑面而来——但街上几乎没有人。
Gubei Miao Street is neither the temple you imagine nor the street you picture.Standing at the entrance of the ancient street in Gubeikou Town, you see a street in slumber. Blue bricks and gray tiles, temples standing in rows, the scent of incense and the weight of history from the foot of the Great Wall—all hit you at once—but almost no one walks there.

这里是北京唯一的”中国历史文化名镇”,拥有72座庙宇的历史记忆、40公里长城防线的边关气魄、1.4公里古街区的完整肌理。然而,这一切正在以一种令人惋惜的方式沉睡。与此同时,在社交媒体上,”寺庙旅行”话题已积累超过14亿次浏览,”年轻人上香”成为席卷全国的文化现象,庙宇经济正以前所未有的速度崛起。
This is Beijing’s only “Chinese Historical and Cultural Town,” home to the historical memory of 72 temples, the frontier spirit of a 40-kilometer stretch of the Great Wall, and the complete texture of a 1.4-kilometer ancient street district. Yet all of this lies in a regrettable slumber.Meanwhile, on social media, the topic “temple travel” has accumulated over 1.4 billion views, and “young people offering incense” has become a nationwide cultural phenomenon. The temple economy is rising at an unprecedented speed.

这不是一场纯粹的概念设计竞赛,也不是传统意义上的招商引资。它是一次以竞赛为引擎、以创意为钥匙的系统性实验——我们邀请建筑师、设计师、艺术家、商业主理人,共同回答一个问题:如何让一条沉睡的庙宇古街,成为全国首个”街庙融合 + 非标商业”的青年潮流聚集地?这个问题没有标准答案。但我们相信,答案就藏在你的方案里。
This is not purely a conceptual design contest, nor a traditional investment attraction effort. It is a systematic experiment driven by competition and unlocked by creativity—we invite architects, designers, artists, and commercial curators to answer one question together:
How can a sleeping temple street become the nation’s first youth-oriented hub combining “street-and-temple integration” with non-standard commerce?There is no standard answer—but we believe the solution is waiting within your proposal.

核心命题:如何以设计的力量,将古北口镇的长城边关历史与庙宇文化底蕴,转化为具有当代美学价值的空间体验?
Core Challenge:How can design transform Gubeikou Town’s Great Wall frontier history and temple cultural heritage into spatial experiences with contemporary aesthetic value?

设计方向(可包括但不限于):设计方向可包括庭院改造与建筑空间活化设计、公共艺术装置与景观小品、灯光设计与夜间场景营造、文化展陈与沉浸式体验设计、街区界面与导视系统设计,以及临时性或可拆卸的快闪空间设计。
Design Directions (including but not limited to):courtyard renovations and the activation of architectural spaces, public art installations and small-scale landscape features, lighting design and the creation of night-time atmospheres, cultural exhibitions and immersive experience design, street interface and wayfinding system design, as well as temporary or modular pop-up spaces.

核心命题:如何在保留古镇历史风貌的基础上,设计一套与古北口气质相符的非标商业模式,实现可持续的长期运营?
Core Challenge:How can a non-standard commercial model be designed that aligns with the character of Gubeikou while preserving the town’s historical features, achieving sustainable long-term operation?

这是一段关于「蓬勃的生命」与「深刻的使命」碰撞后产生的故事。2010年5月,在一群年轻的建筑师对中国目前设计人才现状进行争论的过程中,一个年轻、敢为人先而富有活力的组织“AIM – 建筑师使命”宣告成立。AIM旨在通过竞赛的方式,从年轻设计师中选拔优秀的人才,而更具意义的是,我们希望通过这一竞赛活动,能唤起更多的青年设计师对设计的热情和投入,对社会责任感和使命感的关照,积极去思考与行动。
This is a story born from the collision between “vibrant vitality” and “profound mission.” In May 2010, during a debate among young architects about the state of design talent in China, a pioneering and energetic organization—AIM (Architectural Mission)—was founded. AIM aims to identify outstanding talents among young designers through competitions. More importantly, we hope to inspire more young designers to reignite their passion and commitment to design, reflect on social responsibility and purpose, and actively engage in thinking and action.

AIM始终将关注重点放在青年设计师的成长以及随着社会发展,被忽视的弱势建筑群体,同时与政府、院校、媒体、公益组织、事务所、设计师、开发商等多方保持着良好的合作关系。AIM始于北京,致力于为文旅行业提供拥有兼容性、持续性、生产性、生长力的内容产业及创新人才。16年38场竞赛,8000+份创意解决方案,100万+影响人群,涉及建筑设计、民宿、IP公共艺术、文创等。在不断更新迭代当中,形成了以奖代补、以赛代招的创新竞赛招商模式,通过组织一场竞赛,营造一个社群,并搭建一个连接生产需求和生产力的平台。在文旅的常规赛道内,创造出多元化路径以解决“IP升级、人才升级、内容升级、社群升级”的关键内核。
AIM has always focused on the growth of young designers and the oftenoverlooked vulnerable groups in architecture amid social development. At the same time, it maintains strong collaborative relationships with governments, academic institutions, media, nonprofit organizations, design firms, designers, developers, and other stakeholders. Originating in Beijing, AIM is dedicated to providing the cultural and tourism industry with content and innovative talent that is adaptive, sustainable, productive, and growthoriented. Over 16 years, AIM has organized 38 competitions, gathered over 8,000 creative solutions, and impacted more than 1 million people—spanning architectural design, homestays, IPbased public art, cultural creativity, and more. Through continuous evolution, AIM has developed an innovative competitionbased model that replaces subsidies with awards and recruitment with contests. By organizing a competition, it builds a community and creates a platform connecting production needs with productivity. Within the conventional track of cultural tourism, AIM has forged diverse pathways to address the core challenges of “IP upgrading, talent upgrading, content upgrading, and community upgrading.”
